Conchords take flight

I’ve been eagerly anticipating the new HBO show Flight of the Conchords. See video embedded in this post way back when – The Hiphopopotamus Versus The Rhymnoceros (featuring the Hiphopopotamus and the Rhymnoceros).

Saw the debut of the show last night. It’s charming and odd and funny and sufficiently understated that I think

1) HBO gets props for doing something unconventional – again, and

2) I can’t imagine it lasting long.

Except that it’s clearly produced for about 15 cents per episode, which perfectly fits the theme of the show, if there is one. Maybe that’s why it appealed to the HBO powers, who apparently spent themselves silly doing Rome. Maybe the low cost will make Conchords a keeper in that coveted 10:30pm slot. Here’s hoping…

You can listen to a couple of tunes on their MySpace page, including The Humans are Dead as featured in the cell-phone video last night. There’s a bit of R-rated language here and there, fyi. On YouTube you can undoubtedly find other favorites like Business Time and Albie, the Racist Dragon.
