Music business

The blog Marginal Revolution has an interesting post and discussion about Radiohead’s new album (“pay whatever you want for the download”) and its possible impact, or lack thereof, on the music industry.

Personally I think the comments about how this won’t change the business are well beside the point. The industry, which has done a truly breathtaking job of alienating its own customers, has been in trouble for a long time – to borrow an elegant phrase used elsewhere to describe the long-distance business, “a long, beautiful slope to nowhere.” Various milestone anti-establishment efforts by Prince, or Radiohead, or whomever, are the effect, not the cause.
