If you think about it, the fact that the consumer confidence index drives the economy is sorta one of the reasons we’re buggered to begin with.

  1. The more confidence consumers have in consumer confidence, the more consumer confidence will drive consumer confidence, with well-understood implications for the scaling of chaos…

  2. I have just finished writing a short essay arguing that consumer confidence is very inaccurate estimation of…well, of anything. It’s based on survey of households, doesn’t seem to follow any historical patterns and doesn’t account for change in expectations. One of the most overrated indices imho.

  3. I cotton to the idea that going forward, rabid consumption won’t be the primary lever that moves the economy. If that’s the case, the stock market’s unhealthy (per your comments) interest in this number will diminish.
